Miranda's Christmas present

This is (the start of) River's vest from Firefly-discussion and plans are in this entry.

I'm making it in Knitpicks Color Your Own, with a C hook. It's going pretty quickly-unlike knitting, crochet openwork is actually faster than nonopenwork. And crocheting is faster anyways.

Of course, it probably helps that I'm working from the center out.

Here's the pattern for the whole square. (The one shown is most of the way through Round 16.)

Abbreviations:

  • **, #: Often you will want to do the same thing several times. Repeat the section between *s as many times as is called for. If there is a #, on the last repeat, stop after the #, and not after the last *.

So, for example, Round 1 says: "Work *dc, tr, dc, #dc* 4 times". This means work:
dc, tr, dc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, dc, tr, dc.
  • Ch - Chain
  • Yo - yarn over the hook
  • St - stitch
  • Sc - single crochet: insert hook and pull up a loop, YO and pull through both loops on hook
  • Dc - double crochet: YO once, insert hook and pull up a loop, *YO and pull through first two loops on hook* twice.
  • Tr - triple crochet: YO twice, insert hook and pull up a loop, *YO and pull through first two loops on hook* three times.
  • Qc - quadruple crochet: YO three times, insert hook and pull up a loop, *YO and pull through first two loops on hook* four times.
  • Sl st - slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over and pull this loop through everything else on the hook.

Ch 4.

Round 1: Work *dc, tr, dc, #dc* 4 times in 4th ch from hook. Join to first st with a sl st.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in next st, *(2 dc, tr, 2 dc) in next st, # 1 dc in each of the next 3
sts* 4 times, 1 dc, join.

You should now have 32 sts, including turning chain.

Round 3: Ch 4, * skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, (dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, dc) in next st,
**ch 1, skip 1 st, dc** # twice* 4 times, ch 1. Join.

You should now have 24 ch-1 loops.

Round 4: Ch 4, * **tr in next mesh, tr in next st** twice, 2 tr in next space,
(2 tr, qc, 2 tr) in next st, 2 tr in next space, **tr in next st, tr in next mesh,** twice,
# tr in next st*, join. 72 sts.

Round 5: Ch 4, *1 tr in each of next 8 sts, [tr, ch 2, qc, ch 2, tr] in next st, 1 tr in each of next 8 sts, # tr in next st* 4 times,
join.

Round 6: Ch 4, *tr in each tr, ch 2, skip ch-2 space, [2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr] in next
tr, ch 2, skip ch-2 space* 4 times, tr in each tr, join.

Round 7: Ch 4. *Tr in each tr until the last tr before ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip last
tr and space, 1 tr in each of the next 2 tr, ch 1, [tr, ch 2, 2 qc, ch 2, tr] in ch-3 sp, ch 1,
1 tr in each of the next 2 tr, ch 2, skip ch space and 1 tr* 4 times.

Each side should now have a central block of 17 stitches, surrounded by openwork
in the corners. Those central blocks will now get smaller by 2 sts every round, and
the openwork will expand massively to compensate.

Round 8: Ch 4. *Tr in each tr until the last tr before ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip last
tr and space, 1 tr in each of the next 2 tr. Ch 1, tr in sp.

Work corner as follows:
[ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr, ch 2] in ch-2 sp,
qc in each of next 2 qc, [ch 2, tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1] in ch-2 sp.

Tr in ch-1 sp, ch 1.
2 tr in next 2 tr, ch 2, skip ch space and 1 tr.*

Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Tr in each tr, join.

Rounds 9-11:

Ch 4.

*Tr in each tr until the last tr before ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip last
tr and space, 2 tr in the next 2 tr.

**Ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp** until you run out of ch-1 spaces.
Work corner.
**Ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp** until you run out of ch-1 spaces. Ch 1,
2 tr in next 2 tr, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp and 1 tr.*

Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Tr in each tr, join.

Sleeve gap starts here

Round 12:

Sl st in each of next 4 tr, sl st in each of next 2 ch, sl st in next tr. Sc in next tr.

Ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp* 8 times.

*Work corner.

**Ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp** until you run out of ch-1 spaces.

Ch 1, 2 tr in next 2 tr, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp and 1 tr. Tr in each tr until the
last tr before ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip last tr and space, 2 tr in the next 2 tr.

**Ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp** until you run out of ch-1 spaces.*
Repeat from * to * 2 more times.

Work corner.

Work *Tr in next ch-1 sp, ch 1* 8 times. Dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next tr.

Rounds 13-15:

Turn. Work sl st in next dc and in ch-1 sp, ch 4. *Tr in next sp, ch 1* 8 times, tr
in next sp.

Note: in Round 15, you are working a single tr in the middle of the three non-gappy
sides.

Round 16:

Ch 4, turn, *ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp* across.

**Work corner. *Tr, ch 1* in each ch-1 sp. Tr in each of next 2 tr.

Ch 1, skip 2 loops and 1 tr, tr in each of next 2 tr. *Ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp*
across.**

Repeat from ** to ** 2 more times. Work corner, *tr, ch 1* in each ch-1 sp across.

You should now have 12 tr on each side, including the two in the corner, but
not counting the ch-5 loop.

Round 17:

Ch 3 more (so you have a total of 4 chains coming off your hook), turn.

*Ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp* across.

**Work corner. *Tr, ch 1* in each ch-1 sp until you reach the 2 consecutive tr.
Skip 1 tr, tr in next tr, ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, tr in next tr, *ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp*
across.**

Repeat from ** to ** 2 more times. Work corner, *tr, ch 1* in each ch-1 sp across. Undo that last ch-1 and finish off.

You should now have 14 tr on eac side, including the two in the corner, and INCLUDING
the ch-5 loop this time.

Notes for doing the rest (they're a bit vague) are here. Someone else wrote some more detailed finishing instructions, here.
