DIY craft tools
I want to make wooden knitting needles/crochet hooks.

I need:

  • Wooden dowels
  • Cutting tool. Hey, my Swiss army knife works!
  • Pencil sharpener (for larger needles)
  • Fine grit sand paper (220 grit to make the tips of small needles; really fine grit for actual finishing work. The final sanding should be done with 600-1500 grit sandpaper. Expect to spend at least as much on sandpaper as on wood.)
  • Some sort of surface treatment. I use lemon oil; some people in [info]knitting swear by waxed paper; I have heard carnauba wax recommended. There's a trade-off; the better your sandpaper, the worse your surfactant can be. (With 1500 grit, for example, I can just skip this step.)

If I want straight needles, I need:

  • * Buttons, beads, thumbtacks, or something similar.
  • * Epoxy

Swiss army knife should work unless wood is really hard.

Instead of a button, a lampwork bead would look great.

Hi there -- I was browsing through my Interests, clicked on "bead crochet" and found your LJ.

Enjoy making your needles and hooks!
