Need help converting EZ Feb Baby Sweater [Jul. 14th, 2009|10:30 am]

knitting

[haakstad]
Hello!

I'm knitting Elizabeth Zimmerman's February Baby Sweater, and would like to do the sleeves in the round after knitting the body.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the original instructions (maybe partly because the copy I made to travel with is quite blurred near the end of each line). I understand that on the 2 needle method, an extra lace pattern repeat is cast on for either side of each sleeve. What is meant by "knitting up 4x7 sts at the cast-on sleeve-sts"?.

Am I fine just placing the original sleeve sts on temporary holders, then knitting back and forth on the 92 body sts, then creating an extra 14 sts for each sleeve when I go to knit them in the round?

Thanks.

There was this really spectacular pattern posted here a while ago, and I'm having trouble retrieving it.
It was I believe a cabled earflap hat, and it may have had a scarf with it..Though I don't care about the scarf. The pictures showed it was knit with a chunky olive green yarn...
If anyone has it saved or knows where it is, please let me know!

LaTeX question [Jul. 13th, 2009|12:16 pm]

[sans_galois]
So I have this diagram that I'm trying to include in my thesis. I have a couple different copies of it in different file types, seeing what works best. Right now, I'm using a jpg because I can't get the file to compile with bmp or eps.

Now, I'd really like to use the eps, in particular. Can anyone think of a reason that LaTeX would simply not recognize the eps extension (this is the error I get when trying to compile) ?

Thanks!

EDIT: The issue was PDF output. hurr

Even though I feel like I often finish something, I always have so many works in progress! But I guess it's nice to have something to choose from. These are all small - after I finished my latest sweater I've had to recover with small patterns that only take 50-100 grams of yarn. :) my latest under the cut! )

Paper ends [Jul. 12th, 2009|02:18 am]

I've just finished unpacking all my origami stuff (moving house = complete nightmare!) and have just found my basket of paper cast-offs and was wondering if anyone can recommend anything I can do with them.

As a lot of origami uses square paper I tend to buy cheap colored pads of A4 and A5 paper and then cut them into squares and I've always kept the negative, long rectangular bit of paper that I didn't need for the model and now have hundreds of them in all different sizes and would like to make something with them - I just use them mostly as bookmarks and for cardmaking atm.

A lot of origami-ers (uh... folders? Origamers? :s) probably have the same shape of paper and I hate seeing good paper go to waste. Any ideas? What do you do with your rectangular left-overs?

Awesome yarn score! [Jul. 11th, 2009|05:33 pm]

[wondercheese]
I can't take pics (camera work)right now, but I found yarn-y awesomeness at the thrift store today and I had to share! First up: 4 whole skeins (3 still un-touched, one balled) of chunky weight Misti Alpaca (100% baby alpaca fiber) in a nice dusty pink color. they were $1.99 for all 4 skeins!!!!! I am thinking a sweater, or awesome slipper socks...
Next up: 4 skeins of MANOS cottons stria yarn, which is pure Peruvian cotton (hand dyed, hand spun. I'm not sure how much there is, I have 4 labels, one yarn-shop ball, remnants from 3 ball and two sweater sleeves. This stuff is fairly light weight. I'm thinking socks for this, I don't think there's enough to complete a sweater (hence it's half-finished presence at the thrift shop). I will recycle the sleeves. It's also a dusty pink color. I may try arm-warmers for my sister in this stuff. This was $2.50 for all of it.
Also: 2 skeins of chuncky weight pink and white (plied together) 100% shetland wool One was $.75 the other was $1 (one's pretty tangled)
Last: 2 skeins of light weight 100% mohair in black. $1

All in all it was a good day for my stash. $7.50 on yarn and got nicer yarn than I usually get to use! There was also tons of that ribbon yarn stuff, originally priced at 8.50 a skein, but I really don't like knitting that stuff, so I left it there for someone else to find!

storage? [Jul. 11th, 2009|03:08 pm]

[ambiguously_jer]
How do you store your yarn?  Currently, I have every in either plastic bags or milk crates scattered around the apartment and am looking to get a little more organized.  I'm interested in hearing how (and why) you store your yarn.  Sealed containers?  Open air?  In sealed bags in open containers?  By fiber content?  By project?

I've got one of those 4 "cube" bookcases as yet unbuilt and was thinking about getting the canvas squares to put in them.  Can you think of any reason this isn't a good idea?

(I just went to pick up my skein of seasilk which, through some stash rummaging last night, ended up stuck to some Lopi...  Organizing has just taken on new priority...)

Facts about Rotations [Jul. 10th, 2009|04:58 pm]

I have two elementary questions on rotations which I couldn't find answers to on Wikipedia.

Working in R^n, if I fix an arbitrary order of the n choose 2 coordinate planes, can I always decompose any unitary matrix as a composition of rotations in those coordinate planes, in the chosen order? Also, if R and U are rotations in two different coordinate planes, can I write RU = U'R' where R' is a rotation in the same coordinate plane as R and U' is a rotation in the coordinate plane as U? References greatly appreciated :)

Superwash Wool [Jul. 10th, 2009|05:55 pm]

knitting

[veal]
I'm planning on knitting the Curlicue Coverlet for my new nephew. I would like to do it in a superwash wool since I am already knitting him a summer blanket out of corn. I haven't worked with a lot of superwash so I am looking for recommendations.

I've used KnitPicks Swish, which is super soft but I find it pills like mad when you machine wash and dry. also, they seem to have a much smaller color selection now.

I've also used Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted, which I love, but at $20 a skein, a blanket is going to get pricey quickly. Also looking at Dream in Color.

I would love to hear how Cascade 220 Superwash is from anyone who's used it. I felt a knitted sample in the store and it was rather rough, I was wondering if it gets much softer after a good wash and dry and if it has the same pilling issue as KnitPicks Swish.

Thanks!!

Super quick question.

I'm working on this mustard scarf pattern )

(cut for pattern details)

And I was just wondering, how many stitches would I have to add on for one more repeat of the k1, slip 1, yo, k2tog thing... I can't figure out if its a set of 3 or 4... or I'm totally wrong.

I'm just wondering because I'm using bulky instead of worsted weight and its not as wide as I'd like it to be and I haven't figured out how to adapt patterns to different weights yet.

Thanks!

A proof of the Monotone Convergence Theorem [Jul. 8th, 2009|03:43 pm]

mathematics

[llyrfish]
MCT: Let f_n be an increasing sequence of nonnegative measurable functions, bounded above by and converging up to f. Then \int f_n \uparrow \int f.

Cheney (GTM 208) has this proof of the MCT, due to Rudin:
First, f_n < f_{n+1} < f implies \int f_n < \int f_{n+1} < \int f, so lim \int f_n exists and is less than \int f.

Now, let g be a simple function with 0 <= g <= f, and let 0 < \theta < 1. Let A_n = {x | f_n(x) > \theta g(x)}. Then A_n is an increasing sequence of sets whose union is all of X, so \mu(A_n \cap E) \uparrow \mu(E). Writing g = \sum \lambda_i \Chi_E_i (where \Chi_E is the characteristic function of E), this gives \int g_n \Chi_A_n = \int \sum \lambda_i \Chi_{A_n \cap E_i} = \sum \lambda_i \mu{A_n \cap E_i} \uparrow \sum \lambda_i \mu{E_i} = \int g.

So now we have \theta \int g = lim_n \int \theta g_n \Chi_{A_n} < lim_n \int f_n. Letting \theta approach 1, we have \int g < lim_n \int f_n, and then taking the supremum over all simple functions g < f, we have \int f < lim_n \int f_n, which is the other inequality we wanted.

This is a cute little proof which is substantially shorter and more elegant than most other proofs I've seen of the MCT, but my question is, why do we need this \theta? Can't we just throw it out altogether and work directly with g instead of \theta g?

Have you ever done any analysis on the function
K = -4/φ4 (φΔφ - |∇φ|2),
where ∇φ and Δφ are the gradient and Laplacian of φ: R2 → (0,∞), respectively?

Motivation: if φ is a conformal change of the flat Euclidean metric on the plane, then K is the new scalar curvature.

Edit 1: Let U be a compact, connected region in R2. Let κ be a large positive number. How can I determine if the PDE
K = &kappa
has a solution in U? I need that the solution φ is positive, but I don't care if it's unique.

Edit 2: My geometric intuition tells me that if κ and U are both too large, there should be no solution, since then there would be a geometric obstruction, but I need some way of understanding this better. Scratch that: consider stereographic projection of the sphere of radius 1/κ. In coordinates, we can get a conformal change φ of the Euclidean metric. This φ will then satisfy the equation K = κ on the whole plane. Hmmmmmm I don't understand this stuff well at all.

Edit 3: Talking to my friend, I realized I need to formulate this PDE problem better. I'm going to think on this for a few days and probably bug all of you again. Thanks!

[mood | confused]

so, the lovely [info]lupatria_ignis found the correct cable pattern for me. she scanned it from the stitch dictionary she found it in and everything for me! :) in light of this, i don't actually know which book it's from or anything, which brings me to my problem:

i'm so confused by the directions.

again, here is a photo of the cable i'm trying to do (it's the centre one): http://www.clanarans.com/ca/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/50/products_id/22/currency/USD

here are the instructions:

Begin with 14 stitches (bordered by reverse stockinette)
Row 1, 5 and 9: (k2, p2) rep to last two sts, k2.
Row 2 and all even rows: (p2, k2) rep to last two sts, p2.
Row 3 and 11: k2, p2, LC2x4, p2, k2.
Row 7: RC2x4, p2, RC2x4
Repeat rows 1-12 to continue pattern.

i feel like there's some sort of context i'm missing? i figured, for example, LC2x4 was cross 2 stitches in front of four, but this doesn't actually work or produce the intended cable. i'm sure it has to work somehow, but i can't figure out how i'm actually supposed to cable this. i found that the same cable pattern is used in these handwarmers: http://alisonknits.typepad.com/alisonknits/2008/01/new-pattern-cha.html and in ravelry, some people mentioned it uses two cable needles. i tried wrapping my head around THAT, and i don't understand how i would use two cabling needles for this.

please help!! :(

thank you so much!

[eta] using the cable chart maker in the comments, i replicated the cable chart that came with the instructions. i messed it up and put the first cable on the 2nd row instead of the 3rd, but you get the idea.
chart under cut )

in the dialog box, i put 'cable 2 knit stitches in front of 2 knit stitches with 2 purl center stitches.' i don't know what that means but it made the right image. :\

yarn, a sweater dress, and a reflection [Jul. 6th, 2009|02:31 pm]

knitting

[disenchantedgrl]
Hi everybody,

I have a crazy idea to make a sweater dress. So searched around and found this on the lionbrand  website. I think it's a good pattern (I couldn't find a free sweater dress pattern or any sweater dress pattern except for this one) but I don't want to spend $100+ for yarn on it. Does anyone know any safe discount online yarn store?. I shop at smiley's yarns but they don't have the yarn I want and I don't how to substitute yet (I usually just pick a yarn that gives me the guage of the pattern).  I also don't mind altering the pattern in which case, I would much rather pick a yarn wool/acrylic blend rather than work on cashmare/wool. Anyone have thoughts on that?

I'm putting this out there because after google search and searching here I didn't find anything that would help me out. (I should probably join ravelry as well while I'm on it.)

Thanks ahead of time :D
