Hey y'all. My first post to this group. I love to see all the FO that are posted. :-)

This is a scarf for a work gift exchange. It's made using redheart super saver yarn in blue & orange (GO BSU!).

expectation and variance [Dec. 10th, 2009|02:41 pm]

mathematics

[sans_galois]
Consider the two-dimensional (non-negative) random variable (X,Y), where Y = a + bX + cX^2 + εX, and where εX is a random variable having E(εX) = 0 and Var(εX)=σ2x.

1. What is E(Y|X) and Var(Y|X)?

2. Suppose X is normally distributed with E(X) = μ' and Var(X) = (σ')2. Express Var(Y) in terms of a, b, c, μ', σ')2, and σ2, where you can include integrals in your answer.

The way this question is posed is confusing to me, for whatever reason, but unless I'm misunderstanding something, isn't E(Y|X) just E(Y)? And for 2, I don't see how it helps to know that X is normally distributed....I don't know, this question just has me confused

Thanks for youe help

Question about traveling with a yarn cutter [Dec. 10th, 2009|08:40 am]

knitting

[mood | excited]

I'm getting on a plane tonight, so of course I'm going to use the opportunity to get some Christmas knitting done. The TSA site tells me that it's now OK to bring knitting needles in your carry-on (yay!), but my question is about my Clover Yarn Cutter Pendant. The TSA site says:

"Knitting needles are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage. Items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside which cannot go through the checkpoint and must go in your checked baggage." (emphasis mine)

Does the Clover count as a "cutter with a blade contained inside"? A few online vendors claim you can take one on a plane, and I don't think it's really a "blade" exactly. You certainly couldn't harm anyone with it--you couldn't even give yourself a paper cut. Can anyone confirm? Has anyone successfully taken one on board, or perhaps had theirs confiscated?

**ETA: So much good advice in such a short time! :) I'll summarize for anyone else looking for this info:
- The Clover is technically considered a circular cutter, although it is often allowed to pass through security, and often overlooked if you're actually wearing it as a pendant. But there's still a risk of losing your nifty Clover if you try.
- A nail clipper would suffice, and they're supposed to be allowed, but there's still a chance it could get confiscated depending on the airport (and the mood of the agent, probably!).
- Best bet is dental floss, which has that teeny little cutter and is allowable by TSA standards.

Thank you so much to everyone who responded!

Math assistance! [Dec. 9th, 2009|07:57 am]

[mood | curious]

I am in the process of knitting a hat, and have decided that rather than have it come to a dome at the top like the vast majority of hats, I want it to come to a gradual point that will fold over -- pretty much just like the Cross-Country Chullo from Knitty.

So the thing is I am completely shite at doing the math for this kind of thing and I have absolutely no idea how frequently I need to decrease in order to achieve that end goal, and the pattern doesn't help much since the hat is knitted top-down and it's more of a triangle shape than what I have going. And I'm having a hard time finding any other free patterns that have the flap-over-top for me to improvise from.

If you want to just do the math for me, I've got 120 stitches at 6sts/in on the needles before any decreases, but I'd much rather be told how to do it myself since I know this will come up again. :)

Orientation on Lie groups [Dec. 9th, 2009|12:20 am]

mathematics

[llyrfish]
Let's say you have a top-dimensional left-invariant form ω on a Lie group G, and that this ω determines the orientation on G. Denote by Lg:G\rightarrow G the left-multiplication map, which is a diffeomorphism. I'm pretty sure that Lg is then orientation-preserving, and I'm pretty sure this is a proof: since ω is left-invariant, (Lg)*ω = ω, thus Lg preserved the guy we picked to give our orientation, so it's orientation-preserving. Is this the right way to prove this?

(In case you're wondering, I'm on my way to proving something about Haar measure.)

Give a Hoot Thumbs [Dec. 8th, 2009|11:36 am]

knitting

[baileh]
I have a question about the Give a Hoot mittens. I'm at the part where it says to divide for the thumb by placing 10 stitches onto a holder then knit 16, purling 4, knitting 8, purling 4. My problem is taking those 10 stitches out leaves me with a pretty wide gap between my working yarn and the next stitch to knit. I've done a thumb before where I placed the stitches on a holder but the replaced those stitches on my working needle with a backwards loop cast on and kept going. This pattern doesn't include those instructions, but is that what I need to do to avoid the really wide gap left by those stitches? The answer is probably pretty obvious and staring me in the face, but last night when I tried working it, it just didn't look right at all.

Any help is appreciated!:)

functional analysis [Dec. 8th, 2009|12:55 am]

mathematics

[sans_galois]
So my analysis final is coming up on Friday, and I've been going over some homework problems.

(1) A compact operator is self-adjoint if and only if all of its eigenvalues are real.

This, I think, is false. One direction is certainly true (self-adjoint --> real e-vals), but the other, I suspect is not. However, I've been trying to come up with a compact operator with real eigenvalues that is not self-adjoint... to no avail. Thoughts?

(2) If H is a Hilbert space, A is in B(H), and AT = TA for every compact operator T, then A is a multiple of the identity.

Not sure where to begin. I know that if T is compact and normal, then Aφ(T) = φ(T)A, but that doesn't seem helpful.... Any help would be great.

I imagine I might have another question or two tomorrow or Wednesday. Thanks a lot!

Knitted Domo-kun Pattern? [Dec. 7th, 2009|02:58 pm]

knitting

[meepodeekin]
So, my husband has expressed a need for a Domo-kun for the holidays. I searched Ravelry and the interwebs in general and I couldn't find any patterns. I found one or two patternless projects and a crochet pattern but no knitted pattern.

The main reason I want a pattern is because I am not particularly familiar with the franchise. I don't want to go sit on the floor of a store alternately knitting and measuring against a prefab stuffed Domo-kun that I don't intend to buy. And I'd rather get a pattern than pay for a machine-made stuffed animal that I won't have any use for other than to reverse engineer it...

So, does anyone know of a knitting pattern for a Domo-kun, or even some basic guidelines as to its size and proportions?

Thanks in advance!

[mood | confused]

I have just started knitting http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=117&d_id=10&lang=us This pattern, and am a bit confused by some of the directions... Can anyone explain what this means:

"Cast on 42 sts on double pointed needles size 3 mm. K 2 rounds and continue in rib, P4/K2. When piece measures 2¾'' work next round as follows: P4, K2, P4, K2 in each of the next 2 sts (i.e. K2 becomes K4 – this is mid upper glove), continue with P4/K2 as before = 44 sts."

So am I increasing or something? These are translated instructions, so that probably does have something to do with it...
Help, pls?

in search of a manly scarf pattern [Dec. 7th, 2009|01:46 pm]

knitting

[brainery]
Hi all,

I've been scouring Ravelry and past threads here for a good men's scarf pattern, but haven't been able to come up with anything that quite fits the bill.

I'm looking for a simple, reasonably masculine pattern. What I've gathered from the recipient-to-be is that he's ok with an all-over repeated pattern, but nothing too complex (i.e. nothing with cabling). He already has a bulky alpaca scarf that I made him, so he wants something thinner, flatter, and lighter than that. I think he'd be happy with a plain seed-stitch scarf, but I don't want to get too bored knitting the thing. Any suggestions?

Update on Hiya Hiya Interchangeables [Dec. 6th, 2009|12:05 pm]

knitting

[lakesidetiger]
[Tags|]

I went up to to the "somewhat local" yarn store yesterday to check out the new interchangeables from Hiya Hiya and ended up bringing them home. (along with a few balls of yarn including the Dream in Color Starry in Lipstick Lava-- yum) Anyway, I quickly replaced the US 5's I was using on a scarf (in the round on 24") and set to work. They didn't seem as slick as the Addi Turbo but the yarn quickly buffed them up. I also replaced the 8's on another project (flat)and gave it a try.
They work just fine. Very smooth joins. I didn't have an issue with unscrewing. The swivel might be the reason. The cable is very small and fine but not limp like the Kollage. The needle itself is very lightweight which I like but only 4" long. That takes some getting used to for me. Apparently I hold the needle so that it rests against the meaty part of my palm between the pinky and the wrist and I miss that extra inch.
I had issues with the size 2. I just happened to have a pair of toe up socks on size 2 Addis and being 3/4 of the way up the plain stockinette leg I changed those also. Uh oh! One of the needles has a problem with the threads and didn't want to screw in all of the way. I e-mailed Hiya Hiya right away but haven't heard back from them yet. My husband was able to get it on well enough for me to try out. I tried but just couldn't adapt to the 4" needles. My hands were fatigued rather quickly and the second sock kept falling to the end of my loop. On my Addis they both stay up side by side on the needle and I like it that way. We all hold our work differently so that's just me. When I held them for Continental the needle length didn't seem so troublesome. There's a plus if I ever really start knitting that way. ;)
I don't know how the fine cable will hold up under the weight of say, a sweater. Time will tell.
The person at the yarn store didn't know if extra cables were available but it appears from the Hiya website that both needle tips and cables are sold separately although the supply is currently limited. I think I also saw that 5" will be available in 2010 but don't hold me to that. I would love that though.

I paid about $65.00 (or so) US for the set. The little fabric case is nice and has an extra pocket for stitch markers and a pair of small snippers. I like the joins better than my Harmony's. I can use both sets.
Overall I like them just fine but will stick with Addi Lace for my socks.

In my perfect world there would be Rosewood 5" needles with awesome cables! I would pay dearly for those! Does anyone know if they exist?

ETA in case you missed the other post this is the small set, US 2 through 8. I got 1 of 3 sets available at Knitters Palette in Lakeville, MN. (They have on line ordering also). They told me that this was their 3rd batch and they seem to sell quickly.

Howdy, helpful knitters,

I remember reading on here that a wash in Eucalan can soften up some of the Noro 1x1 scarves. I also have a pair of fingerless mitts I'd like to wash. What do you recommend for washing? Hand? Machine on gentle-cold? I don't want to felt, but I sure would like to soften the Noro a bit, if it's possible.

Thanks for any guidance!

WIP - First lace scarf [Dec. 6th, 2009|12:44 pm]

[mood | creative]

Hi all! I'm new to this community and pretty new to knitting. I've been working on my first ever lace project, the ever popular Branching Out scarf.

Currently, it looks like this: )

Just ignore my obvious obsession with lifelines - it's my first time knitting lace! It makes me feel better!

I do have a slight problem though. I've run out of yarn and the scarf is currently only about 120 cm long. I'd like it to be another 20-30 cm. So the question is, do I need to run out and grab another skein, or will it lengthen up in blocking? The wool used is Patons Merino Totem DK 8ply - 100 per cent Merino wool. For reference, a close up of the pattern looks like this:

HiyaHiya Interchangeable Needles [Dec. 5th, 2009|01:16 pm]

knitting

[lakesidetiger]
I have and love Knitpicks Harmony interchangeables. I love that they are pointy and warm. I do have a problem with darker yarns being harder to see. I have a lot of Addi Turbos that are a bit slick for me. (I love Addi Lace) I liked the feel of Kollage squares but found the cable impossible to work with. (it is actually too flexible IMO)

Does anyone have an opinion on these based on use? I think that I like the idea of a swivle.....

hiyahiyanorthamerica.com/hiyahiya-interchangeable-small-sizes-28us-p-26471.html

I know that we have many discussions about interchangeables but I don't recall anything about these...........

Thanks in advance!

Okay, that link came out weird and I don't know how to fix it. Apologies.

ETA: Thanks all. Looks like an excuse to drive up to a nearby (50 miles. In rural Minnesota that IS nearby) shop that says they have them in stock.

Riesz representation theorem example [Dec. 5th, 2009|10:44 am]

mathematics

[futurebird]
My current understanding of the Riesz representation theorem is that it is useful since it tells you what all bounded linear functionals on Lp look like. They look like the integral of fg where g is some function in Lq. So, I was trying to think of an example of a bounded linear functional on an Lp space (1 <= p < infinity) that didn't look like the integral of fg where g is some function in Lq, and then find it's "riesz representation" --

I had a hard time thinking of a bounded linear functional, mostly because I'm still unsteady about the concept of "bounded" in this context. But I'm pretty sure that for f(x) in L2, T(f(x)) = f(1) would be a bounded linear functional on L2. T(af(x)+bh(x)) = af(1)+bh(1)= T(af(x)) +T(bh(x)), so it is linear. Now is it bounded? That is where I'm stuck.

||T|| = sup |f(1)|/||f||2

I don't know what to make of the numerator. It's smaller than the denominator? So ||T|| <= 1 and it is bounded (?) That means there must be a function g in L2 (I choose L2 since conjugate indicies are confusing otherwise) with T(f(x)) = integral [fg]. OK. What is g? That is where I'm stuck again.

I just want to see this theory "in action" or maybe I have misunderstood its purpose.

Lana Gatto question [Dec. 5th, 2009|04:43 pm]

knitting

[peculia]
Has anyone heard of a Lana Gatto yarn called Groenlandia (I think)? I picked it up in Taipei in April this year and can't find any information on it online.

It is 47 per cent wool, 37 per cent acrylic and 16 per cent mohair and comes in 50g balls at 90m.

The reason I'm asking is because 90m seems awfully small for the yarn. The gauge is 18x13 for a 10cm square, but it looks more like a 4ply ...
