Goals for 2007 [Jan. 6th, 2007|09:37 am]
[Tags|]

So, let's recall my goals for the end of 2006:
  • Christmas presents - all done.
  • A sweater, for me, in Malabrigo - not done.
  • Convert a nontrivial fraction of my sock yarn into a more useful form - Done, although most of the socks were plain stockinette that I did not feel merited a blog post.
  • Dragon shawl - not done.
  • Design work - I got some design work done, but not nearly as much as I had wanted.
Here is the WIP roundup:
  • The green Malabrigo sweater. This is probably the first thing in my project queue, as it is the only thing I both (1) have an immediate use for, and (2) will not take ages.
  • The cabled picture knitting afghan. I would like to do more of this. I think I will stop putting off revised versions of squares; if I can't think of anything I want to/can do that week, I'll just do an improved dragon/butterfly/castle/alphabet/willow square.

If anyone has any suggestions for things that would be cool as cabled picture knitting, leave them in comments. No promises I'll ever make them, but suggestions are appreciated.

  • The dragon shawl. This is still a WIP, and probably will be for a long time, as I have gotten to the point where I have to work from two charts at once, and so it's not that portable-and I have the green Malabrigo sweater to work on for non-portable projects.
And here's the plans roundup:
  • More socks!
  • Handwarmers that fit properly, and mittens and a hood in (probably) an angora blend for really cold days.
  • Do something with the 200g of wool my mother brought me from Ireland. I'm thinking some sort of bag with aran patterns.
  • Art meme. A while ago, on my other journal, I did one of those ``comment to recieve free art'' memes, and got three responses. So far I've made art for one of them.
  • Christmas presents for next year )
To make this a proper goals post, I suppose I should have due dates. But really, I don't see the point. There's the stuff that's due December 24, and the sweater that's due ASAP, and the rest of it-which is all due whenever. I suppose I could redo this post with proper due dates once the green sweater's finished.

Knitting-related plans [Sep. 13th, 2006|10:13 pm]
[Tags|]

So, I think I shall change this to a rest-of-the-year goals post, and just post monthly updates.

My goals for September-December:

  • Christmas presents. This time, I'm only making stuff for two people (my sister Miranda and my cousin Sierra), and none of it will be large.
  • A sweater, for me, in Malabrigo. I'm thinking Menja. Due date: Ideally, by the end of September, but since I only ordered the yarn tonight, this might or might not be practical. Edit: I am unimpressed with Halcyon Yarn. Not only are their shipping charges notably high, their back-ordering policy is: we won't tell you if an item will be back-ordered, we'll just charge you for it and ship it out whenever we can, without asking if perhaps you would like to change your mind or edit your order. It's sounding like I will be lucky to get the yarn by the end of September, let alone knit it up.
  • Convert a nontrivial fraction of my sock yarn into a more useful form. Due date: whenever.
  • The shawl of justifying the title of this blog-thanks, [info]page68, for bringing this to my attention. I'm planning to do this in superfine merino which I shall order from here. This site takes Paypal. So I will wait to order the yarn until the middle of next month, or whenever it is that Amy gets around to paying contributors to the last issue of Knitty. Unless, of course, I lose patience entirely (which is possible.)
  • Design work. I think I will set up an ongoing goal of one 10'' x 10'' swatch (in DK weight yarn) per two weekends. I've completed one such swatch, last weekend. One of these days I will remember to photograph it during daylight, and then you will get to see it.

June goals [Jun. 4th, 2006|10:16 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

Recall my May goals:
  1. Finish Ed's sweater. Not done. )
  2. Do some sort of original design work. Not done. Not even started.
Ah well.

June goals:

  1. Finish Ed's sweater by June 17. I know this is the third time I've said this, but I think, even at this rate, I'll actually achieve it this time.
  2. Get enough of a start on a sweater & hood for my mother that I believe I can finish it by July 12.
  3. Secret projects that shall not be blogged, because they are Knitty submissions and/or presents for people who read this.

(no subject) [May. 1st, 2006|06:07 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

Recall my April goals:
  1. Sweater for Ed. Not done )
  2. Very small teddy bear. Done.
  3. Socks! Not really done. I've got parts of at least two pairs worked up, but nothing I feel like showing off.
May goals:
  1. Finish Ed's sweater. This time for sure!
  2. Do some sort of original design work. I've got two distinct ideas of what this could be. One idea is: more dragons. The other idea is: knitted snarks.

It was pointed out (in a community I read) that the Szekeres snark would look really cool as a cables-and-bobbles pattern. I'm probably going to start simpler, with the flower snark. (To my surprise, although the Petersen Graph is the simplest snark, and has a lot of different ways of being drawn, none of them lend themselves particularly well to being knitted. This is really too bad, as the Petersen graph is probably the most famous single graph in graph theory, and is further cool because it is the smallest counterexample to everything.)

Of course, if I don't get around to knitting snarks, I can always make a quick snark )

March and April goals [Apr. 2nd, 2006|11:01 am]
[Tags|, ]

So how about that one-journal-entry-a-month thing?

Recall my March goals:

  1. Finish Mandy's sweater. This will be Eris. Done! )
  2. Swatching and photography for article. Maybe done? )
April goals:
  1. Sweater for Ed. I'm not sure quite what this will be. Something also green and also with cables. I may just go with a raglan sweater with a few cables thrown on it; it won't be the first time.
  2. Very small teddy bear. I do have 1.5mm needles, and laceweight alpaca, lying about. I also ordered some smaller needles from Lacis, so I might use those instead.
  3. Socks!

February and March goals [Mar. 3rd, 2006|03:50 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

February goals:
  1. Finish Peacock Feathers - Done.
  2. Dragon lace swatch - Done )
  3. Make a hood for a friend who requested one - Done )
  4. Do the swatching, photography, and final rewriting for an article I'm writing for (I hope) Knitty - not done
  5. Obtain all measurements and project ideas for longer-term projects - done with 3/4.
  6. Update this a bit more often - not done. Sooo not done.
So...4/6. Not bad. Not great, either. For March, I'm going to keep it to two goals:
  1. Finish Mandy's sweater. This will be Eris, pullover version, in Andean Silk in Leaf. I've just gotten a few rows past the end of the collar: It looks like this. )
  2. Swatching and photography for article. This time for sure!

Knitting-related goals for February [Feb. 1st, 2006|05:53 pm]
[Tags|]

I'm taking a cue from Jessimuhka here.

February goals:

  1. Finish Peacock Feathers-as I write this, it's sitting on my lap in the middle of row 240 (out of 250), so this should be plausible.
  2. Do at least a few swatches for my planned next lace project-a shawl with dragons on it. Since Walker 1 doesn't appear to have many lace dragons, this will be designed from the ground up.

I'm TAing this quarter, so I have one class I have to attend, but only have to take notes on about half of-I don't think I need to record the proofs of the theorems, just what they are. So I tend to spend about 90 minutes a week sitting in the last row, doodling. Or rather, designing knit patterns. I've got some dragon wings and a snake head or two I'd like to try out.

  3. Make a hood (like this one) for a friend who requested one, and bought the yarn for it.
  4. Do the swatching, photography, and final rewriting for an article I'm writing for (I hope) Knitty.
  5. Obtain all measurements and project ideas for longer-term projects. Specifically:
    • A sweater for my mother-I'm thinking of Eris in Andean Silk.
    • A hat and gloves for my cousin. These are for her Christmas present for 2006.
    • Something or other for Ed and Mandy. I made Leaves in Relief for Mary and Josh when they got married, so Ed and Mandy should get something. They're getting married in June, and at this point, probably aren't getting anything big by the end of winter (it's been an absurdly warm winter this year), so I'm not in a rush with this either, but if I finish all the above goals, this is what I should start.
  6. Update this a bit more often.
