Miranda's lace [Mar. 19th, 2007|07:43 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

So a while ago, my sister sent me a request:
Here's what she wants )
So I went looking online for black laceweight.

KnitPicks did not have any. That is, they have four kinds of laceweight, two of which come in solids, and none of which are black. I checked a few of the other usual suspects (elann, kpixie, etc.) and eventually settled on Zephyr Wool-Silk, which I elected to order from theknitter.com.

The thing about theknitter.com is this: their prices are lovely, and they have a good selection (of lighter weights, at least), and they take Paypal. All three of these are good things. So I will probably continue to order from them.

The only thing I don't like about theknitter.com is that their shipping time is usually about two and a half weeks, most of which is just administrative stuff on their end. So when I order things from them, I shall have to remember to order it weeks before my previous project finishes.

The yarn finally arrived today. It's not quite black; it looks dark gray. I think it's mostly that it's half silk; consequently, it is shiny, and the shiny bits are dark gray, not black. I hope that this is okay with Miranda.

Clickee ye here for design details and plans that my sister should perhaps not read, if she would like to be surprised... )

Things I would someday like to make [Aug. 26th, 2005|05:10 pm]
[Tags|]

For things I've started, or am planning to make at some time a little more specific than "sometime in the future", see my todo list.

Lace

The Forest Path Stole from Summer '03 Interweave Knits: pics are here and here. This would probably be in those two leftover skeins of Thistledown Singles I have lying around.

You know what? I don't really want to pay $4 shipping fees for this pattern. And looking more closely, it looks like three lace patterns-all of which I recognize from Walker. So I might just end up doing my own lace entrelac stole, thank you.

Some sort of self-designed Faroese lace shawl, probably with dragons and/or beads on it

Sweaters

Elizabeth 1

Menja

A cardigan with a tree on it (yes, this is inspired by Eris, why do you ask?)

Other items

Doilies: these ones are really pretty

Calla lilies, daffodils, or irises.

Nerd knit items in general, but particularly:

Really go to town on the dice bag pattern: make d8, d12, and d20 bags (but not boring cubical bags or abominations of geometry d10s), play around with various zipper placements and ways to avoid seaming, (which means both knitting weird shapes and doing funky stuff to make it fold nicely), maybe figuring out a way to do the numbers as cables instead of embroidery.

Embeddings of RP²: Boy's surface, Roman surface, and a cross-cap mitten I'll actually wear.

More very small stuffed animals, about D&D miniatures size. This was inspired by someone who knitted up KnitPicks Shimmer on 1.5mm needles and got a reasonable fabric. I did this and got a gauge of about 13 sts/inch, so maybe this would be doable. I'd probably have to use crochet cotton, though.

Still need to make the moon.

Josh's sweater: Done. It's knitted, the ends are woven in, and it's currently sitting on the spare bed drying.

Also there is a swatch in merino aran for my next sweater project: Angband. Although I'll probably have to reswatch for that one, sigh. Ah well. It's not like I don't have other stuff to do.

So the current project queue looks like this:
-Gauge swatches
-Pattern swatches (for runes, leaves, flowers, the moon, and particularly steep branches)
-Chess set and Angband sweater. (The chess set is simpler, and if I want to submit it to, say, the next Stoller book, I have to get it done soon, but it won't be at all used until Bobert graduates, and a sweater I can use now. Besides, I'd need more thread.)

-Teddy bears or stuffed animals for Hayley and the twins

-Faramir sweater for Dad
-Spider Queen stole for Sierra
-Spiderweb skirt for me. The rest of this will take two or three months; hopefully she'll publish the pattern by then.

Snake [Sep. 6th, 2003|09:13 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

I really like the way the snake's head is looking-it's really simple, but it looks darn good. Need to decide whether I want seed beads or the small round beads as eyes. Perhaps I should ask Steph's advice.

Also, the light in my room is better than the light in the TV room at home. Thus, I can work on this at night (black or not).

I need to figure out how the back pattern should work.

Diamondback calculation )

Beaded winged snake [Sep. 4th, 2003|08:58 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | creative]

I've started this-I have the top part of the head done. It is a separate piece from the rest of the body-I figured that it's a stuffed animal, I can afford to have some extra tag ends, since I don't have to weave them in. By the same token, I'm not going to thread on all of the beads at the start, because then they get tangled and knotted, and it's all bad.

I should go out and buy little hematite beads for eyes. And wire. Mustn't forget wire.

For now, I am thinking of the snake as Alya; that will probably change, especially if I give her away. If I ever get around to making a sea serpent, I will probably have to call it Alphard.

This is going slowly, as I can't work on it at night-too dark to see the black thread.
